WSP USA received a 2013 Asphalt Paving Award of Excellence for the cold milling and hot mix asphalt (HMA) resurfacing of the Chrysler Freeway (Interstate 75) from Piquette to 7 Mile Road in Detroit, Michigan. The award, presented jointly by the Asphalt Pavement Association of Michigan (APAM) and Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), recognized the firm's achievement in the category of single course hot mix asphalt (HMA) overlay projects.

WSP was the consulting engineer for the project. The contractor was Ajax Paving Industries, Inc., and the owner is MDOT Metro Region, Oakland Transportation Service Center.

The project covered 8 kilometers (5 miles) of one of the busiest parts of I-75. WSP's inspectors worked closely with Ajax and MDOT to complete the work during nights and weekends. The paving process included several innovative practices for echelon paving, longitudinal joint construction and density measurement, ride quality measurement, HMA mixture quality control, and quality assurance. Delivery included a three-year materials and workmanship warranty.

The judging committee evaluated 53 projects in 10 award categories, visiting each of the nominated projects and rating them on appearance, ride, texture, uniformity, longitudinal and transverse joints, edges, utility cover adjustments, and degree of difficulty.

Kirk Branson, Construction Services Area Manager (Lansing), accepted the award on behalf of WSP. Mike Frankhouse was the Project Manager, and Mike Fowler, Chris Jefferson, and Chris Azelborn were the inspectors for Parsons Brinckerhoff.
